Tent Ridge Horseshoe

Spray Valley Provincial Park, Alberta

Our Absolute Favourite Hike in Kananaskis Country

Tent Ridge Horseshoe, located in Spray Valley Provincial Park, is a 10km loop with 830m of elevation gain. It’s aptly named ‘horseshoe‘ because the ridge-walk portion resembles a horsehoe!

This hike can be done clockwise or counter clockwise, depending on if you would rather scramble with your hands going up, or going down. We always do this hike clockwise, as we prefer to scramble up! Not to mention, the views of the Spray Lakes Reservoir when you hike clockwise are unmatched.

Wildflowers line the meadows of the trees at the beginning and end of the hike, and the larches fill the bowl during the fall.

This is our all time favourite hike to do and it makes for a perfect sunset viewing spot!

This is a very popular hike, and you will more than likely encounter numerous other people on the trail, completing the route clockwise and counter-clockwise. It’s important to remember to share the trail appropriately, especially during the scrambling sections when it can get busy and backlogged potentially. Don’t forget trail etiquette and call out if you knock any rocks loose to warn any fellow hikers below.

We do this hike annually–although I would be okay with convincing Jared we should do it multiple times a year– and typically do it for sunset. We like to have the trails a bit more to ourself, and there’s no better place to watch the sunset than up on a mountain top.

We’ve seen lots of wildlife on this trail as well–so make sure your dogs are on-leash when hiking, as it’s also in the provincial park. The first time we did this hike was back when we first started dating, seven years ago, before we had either dog, and we got to watch a mama grizzly and her cub feed in the trees in the bowl while we sat up in the middle of the ridge. We probably sat there for over an hour watching them, and had many people stop to ask us what we were looking at!

Another time, a few summers ago, we were coming down from a sunset hike with a couple of friends and they also had two dogs with them. We were in the forest at this point of our descent, lighting the trail with our headlamps, and we spooked a cougar which luckily ran across the trail and into the bush away from us. We’re always prepared with bear spray, and we had the dogs on their leashes, but that encounter was a little too close for our liking!

This is a hike we will continuously do over and over and over again, because its so beautiful, provides amazing views of the Spray Lakes and the valley, and is also the first ‘difficult’ hike we did together.

It will always hold a special place in our hearts and we love sharing that with the dogs.
